A generation of heroes...

i am currently on my last project of the year which is a 15 week brief of our choice. i have always been interested in conflict from a very young age, i can remember playing 'guns' and making 'dens' down by the river in the village of Halton where i grew up. one event in the history of conflict that always grabs my attention is ww2, the shear scale of this world war always amazes me and in some weird way i wish i was their to experience it so i might be able to relate with the people involved which brings me to my project. i have set out looking for people who were involved in the events of ww2 but not just people who fought, i have set out looking for men and women who were children at the time, who had reserved occupations, who served in the armed services, the reason for this was because the war effected everybody not just the brave men who fought over seas. in the photographs i didn't want any references to the era within my images because i am interviewing my subjects and using a suitable quote as a title for their image which again i intend to be obscure so it isnt immediately apparent what my images are about. this project is also about reflection which is shown by the distant gazes in the images the almost uniformed framing suggests that these people were part of something together but their quotes that give us a tiny insight into their experiences which give them their individuality

These are by no means finished images and are not fully edited. i am shooting this project on a medium format camera... because film is awesome.

  1. Hey Darren,

Cool photos. It looks like you are more focused on the lonely side of the vets. Are you going to be shooting a bunch of them, or just a small series? I do like your comments about playing as a little kid and comparing it to the vets.
